Vintage Wedding Photos

My grandparents, Joseph Alcide LaCour and Sarah Lincoln LaCour, on their wedding day in Mississippi in 1946. They were married shortly after WWII and my father was born a few years later.

Today, we give thanks for the Veterans who sacrificed for us. Many gave their lives, and many returned home to start new families. They left a legacy that lives on today in us. ~ shared by @rachellacour

Flooded with Memories

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on Flooded with Memories

We found this photo in the wake of my grandfather’s death, of my uncle and mother atop my grandparents’ shoulders. It flooded me with memories of how much they imparted. An artist, musician, ad man and outdoor lover – I see my grandfather mirrored in me and in that way he’ll always be with me. ~ shared by @davidwalterbanks

Family Fun, from Maine to Miami

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on Family Fun, from Maine to Miami

From Maine to Miami, 2004.
My kids, Lucy and Rufus, having fun. It was spring break and we were getting out of snowy Maine for a week.
We got Joe’s Stone Crab takeout because 3 year olds don’t do restaurants so well. There was no iPhone, so I shot this with a Holga. ~ shared by @russellkaye

How Many Old Family Photos are Buried in Boxes?

Posted by | · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on How Many Old Family Photos are Buried in Boxes?

Something caught my eye in a flea market in Germany last week. This little family, gazing at me from a box filled with dusty family photos. There were thousands like this.

How many of our most important family memories are collecting dust, hidden away in shoeboxes (or Dropbox)? Once the folks in them are gone, the images are anonymous. Mysteries.

How are you discovering them, sharing them and preserving them? ~ shared by @rachellacour

My Matriarch in Family Photos

This is a photo of my daughter, Violet, when she was about 18 months old, playing piano with my Grandma Bacon.
I love it because it’s generational and it reminds me of the strong connection between the amazing women in my family. ~ shared by @ejcorson

The Moments between Moments

Posted by | · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on The Moments between Moments

This image is of my brother, mother and me. My parents divorced before I was born, so while I saw my father often, it was my brother and mother I spent most of my time with. My mother was amazing at taking photos and making beautiful albums when we were young (a lost art, it seems), and I love flipping through the years of memories with her.
Our expressions (mine in particular) are what I love about this image; we all look in between moments, and that makes it feel less posed and fake to me. You could almost come up with a story about what happened the very next moment (me running and my mother scrambling to catch me, while my brother waited staring at the photographer). I’m actually holding a plastic toy camera in the photo and years later became a professional photographer. Who knew? ~ shared by @kendrickbrinson

When the World Was a Small Place

Posted by | · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on When the World Was a Small Place

This is a photograph my older sister found. It is of me, my sisters, and a cousin who was like a sister. It is Halloween, and we are trick or treating.
This image first struck me when I saw it because I didn’t know it existed. It was a time in our lives when our grandparents and several cousins lived within two or three blocks of each other. We were each others’ greatest friends. We lived in our yards, and came and went from each others’ homes as if they were our own.
Now we are adults, and live much farther away and see each other only a few times a year at best. Sometimes less than that.
I miss those days of innocence. When the world was a small place filled with love and innocence. This photo reminds me of what’s important, of what used to be, but perhaps more importantly, it also reminds me of what could be. ~ shared by @wiljax

The Cornerstone of our Family History

Posted by | · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on The Cornerstone of our Family History

This is my Grandpa Ralph. He was the cornerstone of our family. As a farmer in Iowa, his work ethic and faith shaped the values of our family.
Still to this day, as a business owner, I know the foundation came from him and even generations before him. His faith is a core value we teach our children daily. He also gave me my interest in photography. While in college, I was honored to shoot this portrait of him on my medium format camera, and then develop the film and prints myself. It was around 2001 or 2002.

Quite the legacy he gave me. One of my most cherished gifts in life. ~ shared by @katiebtorres

Life Lessons from Papa

Me, as a little girl, listening to life lessons from my Papa, Manuel Villa. It was 1991. He was probably telling me about the corrupt car dealers, or how I should start reading the newspaper. I miss you, Papa! ~ shared by @elizabethipp
