Just a Simple Sunday Afternoon in the 1960s with my Grandparents

My grandparents back in 1961 or 62, just reading the paper on a Sunday afternoon.

I love the mid-century furnishings. Oh, and grandma’s hat. Love it!

They got married when grandma was 18 and grandpa was 34; then they proceeded to have 7 children.

Grandpa had been in the Army stationed in Panama and went AWOL. He worked on a banana plantation for awhile, and then returned to the states where he lived for some time in fear of arrest.

Eventually he felt safe enough to ask grandma to marry him. She was so young, but was such a strong woman who helped him farm and who canned food, sewed clothes, and baked wonderful pies.

She also worked in a local factory to supplement their income.

In this picture, you can’t see it, but I’m pretty sure they are holding hands. ~shared by @joycebaker17
