Family History, Captured in a Family Portrait from Great Britain

Meet my great grandfather William David Brown, who was born in 1892 in Scotland and married Daisy Benford in 1917. They met before World War I, probably through their fathers, who were both coachmen.

They lived just around the corner from Buckingham Palace. William was already serving in the British Army at the outbreak of WW1 and served throughout its entirety. He was in the Mobile Veterinary Section 10, just think of the film Warhorse!

He went on to work at sea as a chef, including on the Queen Mary.
I’ve just recently found out he also served in the Merchant Navy during WW2, running the gauntlet of U-boats across the Atlantic.

Although I never met him, I know from family stories that he was a kind and caring man. I’m proud of him for his service to others and I’m glad my Nan kept such a vast collection of photographs and postcards! ~shared by @johnyclick
