Saving Family Photos Helps Me Preserve My Memories

This is a man who I remember as a child sitting in his living room rocking chair.

He didn’t say much of anything. He was meek and quiet, he led by example, never raised his voice and was kind.

I remember as a little girl adoring the swing he put into the tree for me; how he followed along closely when I first rode my bike.

His passion was woodworking and his favourite pastime was watching Formula 1.

As I grew older, my memory of him fades as he slowly lost his mind to dementia. How his quietness was more out of obligation than observation. How his hands stopped remembering their places on his lathe.

He died many years ago, but his life fascinates me. Somehow I feel it is my responsibility to honour his memory and life by archiving his images.

So here is one. Meet my grandfather.

This photo was taken by my grandmother on my grandfather’s camera as they set out on their honeymoon. ~@brittanys89
