Picturing Childhood before Helicopter Parenting

Me (the sassy brunette in the pink dress), my brother and sister, and a few girls from the neighborhood. Growing up in the 70’s, the neighborhood kids were everything. Moms never had to arrange play dates or hover over us. They let us be free, have fun, explore and when differences came up, they let us sort them out amongst ourselves. We played outside from sun up til sundown (or at least til the street lights came on). Families were steadfast friends who celebrated the happy times together and were there for each other with comfort and support during the hard times. Things are so different today. Neighborhood kids don’t always play together, or even know each other. Neighborhood families often remain complete strangers to one another. I miss the community feeling I experienced in my childhood. ~shared by @ladyjanevintage
